The 22nd Annual Pig Pickin' in the Park" will
be held by
the Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club on Saturday, June 7,
2008 at the Cary Senior Center located in Bond Park adjacent to the Bond Park
Community Center.
The annual Pig Pickin' in the Park charity event
supports the James Atkins Memorial Scholarship and
Humanitarian Fund that has provided scholarships to
deserving students in our community for the past 22
years. Giving $1,000 in its first year, the Fund
now provides $13,500 annually. As a result, the Cary-Kildaire
Rotary Club is currently able to provide the
following scholarships from the Fund:
-
Four
scholarships to students at four
year schools, renewable each year if academic
criteria are met.
-
Two
scholarships for second year Wake
Technical Community College students
-
One
Bill Phelps Memorial Scholarship to
a deserving individual from the Boys and Girls
Home at Lake Waccamaw, NC.
Over the past 22 years, the James Atkins Memorial
Scholarship and Humanitarian Fund and Bill Phelps
Memorial Scholarship has helped over 40 students
pursue a university degree. Students selected by
the Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club are outstanding in
many ways - academics, school activities, community
service, leadership potential and need.
James Atkins was a charter member of Cary-Kildaire
Rotary Club. Most notable was James' leadership
while serving on the Wake County Board of Education
during the merger years in the late '70s. His
community and church activities were numerous and
varied, allowing him to touch the lives of many,
which is what the Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club has
tried to emulate with the annual Pig Pickin' in the
Park. James' creed was "Never take more out of the
community than you are willing to put back in."
The event itself is a great way to enjoy an evening
with the family that includes a live bluegrass band,
face painting, door prizes and an appearance by a
friendly clown and our very own Cary Fire
Department.
